Folkscafé Global Music

Podium Explore Gratis

On Sunday afternoon we are organising Folkscafé Global Music, a stage for local artists and musicians with roots from all over the world. A few familiar faces from previous editions of Folkskeuken will also be performing again. They share their music and the stories that go with it. After the performances, the audience is invited to actively participate: to sing along, dance or make music in an open and informal jam session/workshop.

Folkscafé is accessible to everyone. For the workshop, 15 drums are available; it starts at 3:30 PM.

The artists

EKAHUIL Ekahuil is a Mexican cellist who, from the Netherlands, takes a musical journey through the folk music of his home country. He gives traditional Mexican sounds, from pre-Hispanic rhythms to popular songs, a fresh, contemporary twist on the cello.

Maryam Movaffaghi Maryam is an Iranian musician from Leeuwarden who plays the Santour: an ancient Persian instrument with 72 strings. Tonight she lets the instrument speak in its purest form: acoustic, intimate and straight from the heart.

Arman Ameri Mahani Arman grew up in Iran, immersed himself in the music of India and eventually graduated in the Netherlands. On the Rubab, a traditional stringed instrument from Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, he brings a meditative mix of Indian and Persian music.

Vythess Vythess comes from the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains and now lives in the Netherlands. She combines pop and R&B with Bulgarian folklore and sings about emotions and her inner world. Expect original songs as well as traditional folk songs.

Basile Maneka Basile is a musician and percussionist from Kinshasa, trained at the National Conservatory of Congo and now based in Leeuwarden. He brings Congolese rhythms and afrobeat: raw, energetic and infectious.
