A World In-Between

Some artists simply defy categorization, yet would make for a fascinating Venn diagram. In this case, imagine overlapping circles with labels like poetry, classical, pop, and spoken word — but also electronics, drum machines, and philosophy. Is there a common thread running through all of these? Absolutely. At the center of the circle, you’ll find cellist Saartje van Camp, who weaves all these disciplines into something entirely her own — something that, surprisingly, just works.

Earlier this year, Van Camp — long-time musical partner of Spinvis — released a solo album that is delightfully strange in all the right ways. Sometimes she speak-sings in irresistibly lilting Flemish or French, sometimes she unleashes her full vocal range, turning her voice into an instrument within a mysterious musical framework. She most certainly brings us hope. Take her single “De hand van de dokter”, for instance, where the phrase “it will be fine, it is fine, it will be fine, it is fine” returns like a hymn.

Live, Van Camp is joined by the equally and unfairly talented multi-instrumentalists Dizzi Geetha (drummer, percussionist & theatre maker) and Judith Rijsenbrij (keyboardist and vocalist). Together, they create a world in between everything — the kind of place you’d instantly want to call home.
