You’re a young writer, and you’re on an island. There’s no festival. It’s not summer vacation either. You’re standing in the soft sand, looking around. Apart from the wind and the gulls, it’s quiet. Not a soul in sight. You climb to the top of a dune and gaze, and keep gazing. Big grey clouds race across the sky like young wolfhounds. Your hair turns coarse, your snot salty. This is how it is here. This is the realisland. A grain of sand in the North Sea. A grain of sand in your mind. Island, horizon, sea. Take me with you, and I’ll write you down.
‘Jonge Schrijvers’ (Young Writers) is a writing program for young people in Friesland, organized by Explore the North and Meeuw jonge theatermakers. Prose, poetry, theatre, songs, screenplays – it all comes up in the writing sessions. Every year, the Jonge Schrijvers appear at Oerol, creating new work especially for the festival, inspired by the island and/or its inhabitants.
This performance is part of the Explore the North Hub. From June 13 to 22, we’ll present work from talents connected to our production house across various locations on the island. Explore the North is a production house and festival based at Podium Explore in Leeuwarden.
