Final Chapter of a Dialogue with Nature
Poetry and music in an annually changing Frisian-international ensemble — that’s IT DEEL, a residency project by the Kleefstra brothers. Last summer, the Kleefstras invited cellist Joana Guerra and violinist Maria do Mar de Brito Lopes for a week-long creative residency at a special location: the Thomas Church in Katlijk. At our festival, they present the fruits of this Frisian-Portuguese collaboration and launch their new work on vinyl.
The central theme running through all IT DEEL collaborations: the relationship between humans and nature, in all its beauty and complexity. It’s not a light topic, but one that is universal and deeply connecting. Each year, it’s remarkable to witness what has emerged from the Fryske grûn — Frisian soil — in the dialogue between the Kleefstras and their European guest musicians. Missed earlier editions? This is your last chance: IT DEEL IV is the final installment of the project. Already a longtime follower? Excellent — we’ll see you there!
Joana Guerra is a cellist, composer, and vocalist raised in the poetic outskirts of Lisbon. Her work spans contemporary classical, folk, and free improvisation. With extended cello techniques and a deep fascination for sound textures, she has become a key figure in Lisbon’s experimental scene.
Maria do Mar de Brito Lopes is a violinist, composer, teacher, and activist. She explores alternative methods of music education, engages in boundary-pushing improvisation and performance projects, and is active in both activist and cultural networks. Her playing is sensitive, inquisitive, and deeply intertwined with her social engagement.
Language: Frisian and Portugese
IT DEEL was created in collaboration with Popfabryk and Explore the North.
