Our changing relationship with food, community, and attention
Step inside Het Grutterswinkeltje for a preview of SRV (of the Future), a Station Noord project by theatre maker Eline de Vries. Her grandfather — one of the last SRV-men of the North — serves as her inspiration. With his mobile shop, he delivered not only milk and jam, but also companionship and a listening ear. What does the disappearance of the SRV-mantell us about our changing relationship with food, community, and attention?

“As a child, my grandfather’s SRV van was my favourite place — a narrow aisle about eleven metres long, filled with some three hundred simple, often local products. Between the milk cartons, conversations unfolded, and my grandfather brought more than just groceries. Ten years ago, he made his final round. Today, that daily ritual has been replaced by self-checkout counters and endless aisles of anonymous supermarkets. We eat faster and more efficiently, but are increasingly disconnected from what we eat — and from one another.”

Eline de Vries, currently part of the Station Noord makers’ trajectory, collaborates with Afke Manshanden. From spatial design to sustainable edible wilderness, Afke aims to build bridges between spatial design and nature. Together, they are in the early stages of their research and, in this preview, share a first glimpse into their creative process.

Het Grutterswinkeltje is the perfect setting — where past and present meet: a tribute to craftsmanship, community, and the slow rhythm of attention.
