The paragon of struggleIt toanbyld fan wrakseling

Every artist knows it: the struggle. Usually you only see the end result – a creative work that is exactly as it should be.

How many versions were made before that point? How many birthday dinners did they have to skip? How many times have they cried, “Why on earth do I have to be a creator? Why don’t I have enough to work, sleep, eat and watch reality TV?!

During a live event by De Moanne at the Stadskas, illustrators and writers talk about their struggles. Moderator Sarah van der Meer walks around and asks them questions. Listen and watch the stories of Tjitske van Dijk, Lara Kool, Piter Banga, Hannes Schievink and Sanne Visser.

About the illustrators and writers

Lara Kool (1985) from Dokkum learned to write Frisian at the age of 32. She is a third-year student at the Schrijversvakschool and is affiliated with Poetry Collective RIXT. She writes poems and short stories for adults and children. Her work has appeared in a number publications, including Ensafh, Tsjil and FeRstival. She is author of the winter 2023 edition of the Leeuwarden City of Literature bookmarks.

One of her poems is on a panel along the walking route It Dichterspaad in Oudega (Sm).

Tjitske van Dijk (1975, Nijland) was a teacher at an elementary school and now works at Afûk. She promotes the use of teaching materials in Frisian in primary schools. She recently took the course Skriuwtechniken A at the Schrijversvakschool. For this story, she was inspired by the young people who unload drugs from containers in ports. ”What moves them to do this?” the writer wonders.

Piter Banga (1969) lives in Haren. He works as a “night guard” in the Prader-Willi House in Mûnein. He has his own Frisian-language band (Volk!!!). Banga writes songs and because writing poetry hasn’t worked out so well for him, he switched to prose. Last year he won the Boeken fan Fryslân writing competition, announced during a festive gathering at the café in Jorwert.

Sanne Visser (26) from Leeuwarden is the “head” behind Waarzitjemetjehoofd (Whatsgoingoninyourhead). On weekdays, she is a teacher of Visual Arts & Cultural and Art Education. In her spare time she makes linocuts, stickers and illustrations. She incorporates whatever she has a fascination with into her illustrations. On her instagram @waarzitjemetjehoofd, she shares her artwork, showing where her head is at that moment.

Hannes Schievink is an illustrator, designer and artist. Their work focuses on the theatrical and mystical.

After receiving a Bachelor in Illustration Design from ArtEZ in Zwolle, Hannes completed a Master in Visual Communication in Stockholm. They also followed the Young Talent Program of Tweespraak through Kultuer Kollektyf.

This evening is the result of an exciting prose summer, in which 15 new talented writers got the chance to publish in Leeuwarder Courant and De Moanne.
