More than images with sound – filmmakers X musicians

What happens when filmmakers and musicians collaborate on audiovisual projects? That question is at the heart of BeeldRuis, a coaching and development project by New Noardic Wave and Popfabryk. On Friday, November 15th, three talented creator-duos will present the outcomes of their BeeldRuis collaboration in the Stadskas: musician ‘tays’ in collaboration with filmmaker Karisha; Alexander Moto in collaboration with filmmaker Drico; and Esther de Jong with filmmaker Jan Martien. With a budget of 2,500 Euros and personalized guidance, they have worked extremely hard to bring about video productions that are more than “image with sound.” In conversation with moderator Afrida, they will share their experiences, challenges and insights. Really interesting for anyone interested in (making) artistic video clips and/or short music films. Bonus: there will also be live performances by the participating artists!

About the artists

Alexander Moto is a storyteller from Gaasterland. He writes honest, reflective hip-hop. As part of BeeldRuis, together with filmmaker Drico Ligthart (LightArtFilms) and producer & illustrator Jort Switijnk (Soulitude), he made a cinematic music video to the track ‘Head First’, taken from Moto & Soulitude’s upcoming album release in 2025, Fluvius. Water and maritime boating run as common threads through both the album and the filmed track. They serve as a line over which Moto drapes the dirty laundry from his upper room.

Esther de Jong graduated from the Academy of Pop Culture in Leeuwarden in 2015.In June 2023, her debut album “Even About Life” was released by Excelsior Recordings, an album written with sharp pen and a sense of (black) humor. The Dutch lyrics put you with both feet on the ground only to sink through it.With an honesty one finds mostly in diaries, Esther describes the many question marks she puts on life. She draws inspiration from artists such as Radiohead, Elbow, Father John Misty, Wende and Robert Long.

tays (Taysier El-Sayed), born in Leiden, is a hip-hop artist who produces himself. He did a minor at the Academy of Pop Culture in Leeuwarden and released his first EP “matter of tays” in 2022. Late last year, tays hosted the aftershow of well-known hip-hop artist NF in AFAS Live, followed up by a Paradiso debut as part of the hip-hop and art collective, Wallplug. His music blends solid Boom-bap beats, dreamy instrumentals and personal lyrics about youthfulness, love and coping with grief.
