Music, literature and all that jazz
Jazz and literature: they go together like gin and tonic. In the 1950s, jazz music was a driving force for writers like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs, the core of the Beat Generation. One of today’s best-known writers, Haruki Murakami, is also a big jazz fan. Legend has it that he refers to as many as 3,442 different jazz songs in his oeuvre. Our little literature festival, in short, cannot go without some finger snapping and head bopping. Fortunately, there is plenty of jazz talent in the North as well.
Such as? The 058 Jazz Quartet, consisting of pianist Dimitris Karkoulias, bassist Jan Ruerd Oosterhaven, drummer André Valkenburg and saxophonist Tim de Vries. The quartet plays well-known jazz standards in their own unique way, with plenty of room for improvisation. Come listen, write, have a drink, melancholically brood about smoky bars and all that jazz!
