Pioneering Female Voice
Ella Wassenaer was one of the few female Frisian poets who dared to experiment in the 1950s. She was not only a true pioneer in terms of form, but also a poet pur sang who dared to place women at the centre of her work in a strongly paternalistic Frisian environment. Now, together with many young makers, we celebrate this important voice. We do so not only with this book launch, but also with The Rediscovery of Ella Wassenaer.
The iconic collection reade runen (from 1959) by pioneering Frisian poet Ella Wassenaer has been translated from Frisian into Dutch for the first time, by Zindzi Tillot Owusu. Wassenaer’s work is accompanied by profound yet illuminating essays by Albertina Soepboer, Maria Barnas, Elisa Demarré, Annelies Verbeke, and Sophia Blyden. Celebrate the rediscovery of Ella Wassenaer with us and join the book presentation!
A collaboration between Explore the North and long-standing partner deBuren (the Flemish-Dutch House, based in Brussels).
