Folkskeuken: Iran

Did you know that not everywhere the New Year begins on January 1? In Iran, the beginning of spring – around March 21 – also marks the beginning of a new year, and we celebrate it with you!

On March 29, our Iranian hosts, Maryam and Akram, invite you to the table at Podium Explore. They will take you on an atmospheric journey through the rich traditions of the Iranian New Year: enjoy authentic Iranian food, listen to ancient poetry and get carried away by music and dance.

Akram and Maryam will also share their personal stories and give you a unique insight into their culture. So sit back, taste, listen and celebrate!

Fun fact: the Iranian New Year celebration is called Nowruz where a ceremonial table is set with a number of fixed elements on it: such as an apple, a mirror and a goldfish. Each element stands for something. For example, coins are laid out for prosperity and wealth, a basket of painted eggs for fertility, an apple (the earth) in a bowl of water (the universe), a goldfish in a bowl as a symbol of life. This table can also be found in Podium Explore on Saturday.
