Meindert Talma’s headstrong enemy
Meindert Talma – the country’s most unknown pop star – is the author of the Fryske Kadoboek 2024. Title: Wynroas, an autobiographical, tragicomic novella about a high-stakes conflict Meindert ended up in after the release of his album De Zee Roept (2011, Excelsior Recordings). The record featured the voice of a legendary Amsterdam sailor and the son of the sailor in question was not amused, all the way to court.
Thirteen years later, this cinematic chapter in Meindert’s life is raw material for new work – or rather, works. Meindert wouldn’t be Meindert if he didn’t also capture his new book in music and a narrative (film) performance.
Wynroas on stage is an audiovisual road trip with an exciting and dramatic ending. Meindert about the story: “I have known so many bad people on my way, most of them soon disappeared from my life again, but for all the people I have had to deal with, Gerrit Huidekoper Jr. comes closest to the ‘my greatest and most headstrong enemy’.”
After touring the province, Meindert and Wynroas will dock at De Stadskas to close the Fryske Boekewike. We hope for autumn wind and rain pounding against the windows. Tension! Dramatics! Angry sailors’ sons! And just Meindert. That’s actually plenty.
