deBuren and Explore the North Festival invited young Dutch and Belgian creators to engage with the work of Ella Wassenaer, a versatile Frisian writer known for featuring extraordinary women as protagonists in her work. In 1959, with Reade Runen, she became the first (only?) female Frisian poet to explore experimental poetry, inspired by De Vijftigers. Like many women writers in her time, Ella faced harsh criticism and was excluded from the literary canon.
Through the residency project De Verwonderkamer, today’s young artists are bringing her legacy back to life. How exactly? Well, we’re not sure yet either! Join us to marvel at what Zindzi Tillot Owusu, Mona Thijs, Jaimy Hindriks, and Charlotte Westra will come up with.
Catch their discoveries on November 8th in Brussels at deBuren, or during the Explore the North Festival 2024!
