{"id":13506,"date":"2025-10-14T14:24:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T12:24:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/explorethenorth.nl\/?post_type=event&#038;p=13506"},"modified":"2025-10-14T15:01:44","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T13:01:44","slug":"francesca-birlogeanu-sybren-van-der-velde-ellis-meeusen-hannes-schievink-de-verwonderkamer","status":"publish","type":"event","link":"https:\/\/explorethenorth.nl\/en\/event\/francesca-birlogeanu-sybren-van-der-velde-ellis-meeusen-hannes-schievink-de-verwonderkamer\/","title":{"rendered":"Francesca Birlogeanu, Sybren van der Velde, Ellis Meeusen &amp; Hannes Schievink &#8211; De Verwonderkamer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><br><strong>A dose of hope in your emergency kit.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens when we don\u2019t clean up or hide away \u2018madness,\u2019 but instead try to understand it?<br>This year, a brand-new performance will once again premiere at our festival, born out of&nbsp;<em>De Verwonderkamer<\/em>&nbsp;\u2013 the annual residency by Flemish-Dutch house for culture and debate deBuren and Explore the North, where Flemish and Northern Dutch makers get to know each other and create new work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>This year, participants will use the book\u00a0<em>De laatste dagen van de dorpsgek<\/em>\u00a0(<em>The Last Days of the Village Fool<\/em>) by Anne Goaitske Breteler as a starting point. The village fool as outsider, mirror, barometer; someone who operates at \u2013 or beyond \u2013 the edges of what\u2019s considered \u2018normal.\u2019 Is there something hopeful to be found in the irrational? From September 15 to 19, 2025, new makers from Flanders and the Northern Netherlands will explore these questions in Leeuwarden. The fruits of this collaboration will, as is tradition, be presented for the first time at our festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>That this process leads to something special was proven last year by\u00a0<em>De herontdekking van Ella Wassenaer<\/em>\u00a0(<em>The Rediscovery of Ella Wassenaar<\/em>)\u00a0by Mona Thijs, Zindzi Tillot Owusu, Charlotte Westra, and Jaimy Hindriks \u2013 a performance that traveled from\u00a0<em>De Verwonderkamer<\/em>\u00a0to Antwerp and will appear this summer at Oerol. In 2022, they participated in the CBK Poetry Slam, and in the summer of 2023, they joined DeBuren\u2019s Writing Residency in Paris. Their poetry has been published in\u00a0<em>Kluger Hans<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Deus ex Machina<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Het Liegend Konijn<\/em>, and on websites such as\u00a0<em>DIG<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Hard\/\/Hoofd<\/em>, as well as performed at events like\u00a0<em>Dans Dichter Dans<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Nijmeegse Po\u00ebzienacht<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Antwerp Queer Arts Festival<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>TILT Festival<\/em>. In their work, they enjoy exploring corporeality in all its forms and probing the shifting boundaries between sexuality, spirituality, the cognitive, and the sensorial. Francesca lives in Leuven, surrounded by books, half-finished artworks, and plant children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<br><strong>Ellis Meeusen<\/strong>\u00a0studied medicine for four years before enrolling in drama school. She is an actor, theatre maker, teacher, and writer. As a writer, she has published prose in\u00a0<em>Das Magazin<\/em>, poetry in the climate-themed anthology\u00a0<em>Zwemlessen voor later<\/em>, and theatre texts with\u00a0<em>De Nieuwe Toneelbibliotheek<\/em>. She attended writing residencies in Paris with\u00a0<em>deBuren<\/em>, and travelled by train through Europe for\u00a0<em>Passa Porta<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Europalia<\/em>. In recent seasons, she toured across Flanders with her own performances\u00a0<em>Faren<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Eerst<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Vitrine<\/em>, as well as the production\u00a0<em>(v)<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0<em>De Nwe Tijd<\/em>. With that same company, she also contributes monthly to the\u00a0<em>Monday Evenings<\/em>, alongside Suzanne Grotenhuis and Freek Vielen. In the upcoming season, she will create her first performance for young audiences:\u00a0<em>confetti<\/em>, in collaboration with Aline Nuyens and Sander Salden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Hannes Schievin<\/strong>k is a Frisian illustrator and artist who explores and communicates the theatrical, the physical, and the mystical through drawings, text, installations, and performances. Always in search of the bombastic and the true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Sybren van der Velde<\/strong> (The Hague, 2001) is a British-Dutch artist who grew up in De Rottefalle, a small village in Frysl\u00e2n. In 2024, he graduated as a performer from the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts. The majority of his work stems from\u00a0<em>hypernostalgia<\/em>, a concept rooted in a deep sentimental longing for a space, place, or moment\u2014whether in the past or the future. He tends to amplify or even fetishize these feelings in both the everyday and his artistic practice. In doing so, he constantly questions whether such emotions are strictly personal, how flexible they are, and whether it is possible to long for a space, place, or time one has not personally experienced.\u00a0<em>Hypernostalgia<\/em>\u00a0neither denies nor fully accepts the largely linguistic limitations tied to nostalgia, but instead plays with a broader spectrum of emotions.
